Meet Gamaliel! My name is Gamaliel Kassa and I’

Meet Gamaliel! My name is Gamaliel Kassa and I’m a rising 9th grader with a deep commitment to hard work, discipline, and creativity—values rooted in my family and the way I approach academics, sports, and the arts.

This artwork was my way of wrestling with a difficult truth: that the American ideal of freedom has often existed alongside, and in conflict with, the Black struggle for justice. Growing up, the Fourth of July never felt like a celebration that included my full history. But through this piece, inspired by Frederick Douglass’s “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?”, I began to see the holiday not just as a symbol of independence, but also as a reminder of who was left out of that promise.

My drawing features a large figure of Douglass mirroring the Statue of Liberty—a powerful image that reclaims the idea of freedom through the lens of truth. Engaging with poetry, articles, and historical perspectives has opened my eyes to what freedom means when viewed through different lived experiences. This piece is both a tribute and a challenge: to honor the progress made, while recognizing the work still left to do.
